COURSE # TOO-368

GPRS and EDGE SYSTEMS OPERATION AND TECHNOLOGY

A short, focused and clear presentation emphasizing the system issues and the convergence of TDMA with GSM into the third generation, 3G..

The explosive growth of cellular and PCS services worldwide provides an indisputable proof of the success of the second-generation networks in meeting customer demands. Why then, with all the success, do we move to GPRS, EDGE, and third generation (3G) systems? This short courseexplores the technical details of this comprehensive enhancement to GSM networks.

The course is an intensive overview of GPRS and EDGE, with specific emphasis on the radio interface, and protocols which influence that interface: MAC, LAC, and LLC. Corresponding deployment in TDMA networks is also covered. The course begins with a summary of those aspects of GSM which are altered in GPRS. The technical details of the GPRS system are explored from an evolutionary point of view, starting with the early HSCSD modifications, followed by the GPRS packet network elements, radio aspects, network interfaces, signaling details, and system operation. EDGE is treated as an enhancement to GPRS. The course concludes with a look at EDGE-Compact as well as TDMA's convergence with GSM.

Who should attend:

This course presents an intensive protocol- and signaling-oriented overview of GPRS and EDGE. System aspects are emphasized, as it builds a GPRS network from the GSM infrastructure. EDGE is explored as a radio enhancement to GPRS.

The course has been developed for project managers, system engineers, test engineers, performance engineers, and all others responsible for product development, system operation and interoperability issues. GPRS/EDGE is treated as a comprehensive enhancement to GSM networks.

Although the course has no prerequisites and is specifically designed for a wide range of interests, it assumes a general familiarity with telecommunications networks and technologies, cellular radio systems, and digital radio technologies. Those new to the industry and/or unfamiliar with telecommunications networks and wireless systems are advised to attend either OEI Course #TOO-316, "Cellular Mobile Systems Engineering", or Course #TOO-330, "Crash Course in Cellular Communications", prior to attending this course.

About the Instructor

Malcolm Oliphant is with Tektronix, where he is the Strategic Marketing Manager for the Mobile Business Unit. He has more than 30 years of experience with mobile radio systems, particularly with first and second generation cellular and PMR (Private Mobile Radio). Malcolm was the Strategic Marketing Manager for IFR until early 2000 and spent most of the 1990s with Schlumberger involved in early GSM deployments. He is currently performing risk analysis in third and fourth generation cellular and other converged communications technologies and networks for Tektronix, which is assuming leadership roles in converged network testing and optimization. He has co-authored two popular books on GSM and PCS. Mr. Oliphant received his B.A., Summa Cum Laude, from Hawaii Pacific University, Kaneohe, Hawaii.
